Introduction

This project scope statement outlines the details for the work completed by Mellon Inc. focusing on the electrical, fiber optic / communication, and instrumentation aspects for the construction of the BioAmber Facility. BioAmber is a trailblazing company that produces bio-based succinic acid and derivatives from glucose, sourced from agricultural suppliers in southern Ontario. These green chemicals are designed to directly substitute for chemicals derived from fossil fuels, providing customers in various industries, including food and beverages, with a range of industrial chemicals such as dyes, perfumes, lacquers, photographic chemicals, alkyd resins, and plasticizers.

Objective:

The objective of the project was to install the required electrical and fiber optic cabling, lighting, and instruments necessary for the operational success of the innovative BIO Amber Facility.

Scope of Work:

The work involved included:

  • Cable Installation: Installed over 160,000 feet of cable necessary for the power and control of the facility.

  • Cable Tray Installation: Installed over 3,500 feet of cable tray to safely contain and protect the installed cables.

  • Lighting Installation: Installed over 80 lights to ensure appropriate illumination for safety and operational efficiency.

  • Instrument Installation: Installed over 160 instruments to monitor and control the facility's operations.

  • Termination Works: Completed over 6,500 terminations to ensure correct and safe connectivity of the electrical and communication systems.

Deliverables:

The project resulted in the successful installation of the necessary electrical and fiber optic infrastructure, lighting, and instruments for the fully operational BioAmber Facility.

Risks:

Potential risks included project delays due to unforeseen obstacles or challenges, unexpected cost increases, issues with subcontractors or suppliers, and uncertainties related to the pioneering nature of the facility and its technology. These risks were mitigated through careful planning, project management, and close cooperation with the BioAmber team to understand and address the specific technical requirements of the innovative production process.
