Introduction

This project scope statement outlines the details for the work completed by Mellon Inc., focusing on the electrical, fiber optic / communication, and instrumentation aspects for the construction of the Origin Materials Facility. This state-of-the-art facility uses biomass, such as sawdust, to make building-block chemicals for the manufacturing of plastic and other products. It's located in an industrial park at the Arlanxeo site on Vidal Street.

Objective:

The objective of the project was to install the required electrical and fiber optic cabling, lighting, and instruments necessary for the operational success of the innovative Origin Materials Facility.

Scope of Work:

The work involved included:

  • Cable Installation: Installed over 200,000 feet of cable necessary for the power and control of the facility.

  • Cable Tray Installation: Installed over 5,000 feet of cable tray to safely contain and protect the installed cables.

  • Lighting Installation: Installed over 150 lights to ensure appropriate illumination for safety and operational efficiency.

  • Instrument Installation: Installed over 200 instruments to monitor and control the facility's operations.

  • Termination Works: Completed over 10,000 terminations to ensure correct and safe connectivity of the electrical and communication systems.

Deliverables:

The project resulted in the successful installation of the necessary electrical and fiber optic infrastructure, lighting, and instruments for the fully operational Origin Materials Facility.

Risks:

Potential risks included project delays due to unforeseen obstacles or challenges, unexpected cost increases, issues with subcontractors or suppliers, and the unique uncertainties associated with the project having been mothballed for one year prior to Mellon Inc.'s involvement. Unknown conditions of the facility, as it was left when the project was originally cancelled, might present unexpected difficulties in installation and setup of the electrical, fiber optic, and instrumentation systems. The risk of encountering degraded materials or installations, or missing crucial documentation or design details, could potentially slow the project progress or increase costs. These risks were mitigated through a thorough assessment of the project site prior to the start of the work, careful planning, detailed documentation review, and diligent project management.
